Reiki: a Personal Journey
By Nick Case, M.S.S.Ch., M.B.Ch.A.
Reiki is a kind and gentle healing art, brought to us from Monasteries of Asia, the ancient learning centres, by way of Japan and Hawaii and now has spread world wide. The story of reiki is fascinating, a quest of a deeply spiritual person but that is not what I want to talk about.
Folks much more knowledgeable than I have written on the spiritual concepts and the history of reiki and the ‘How to do its.’ So when asked to write this piece I thought that it would be of interest for people to know some of the things that have happened to me.
The journey started very simply. I was telling an RMT friend of mine how tired I was at the end of a days work treating feet. She said ‘What you need is Reiki,’ and gave me the name of the person who was to become my first teacher in Toronto. After finding out a little more I decided to attend a reiki course.
At the end of the first day of the course I was a bit skeptical. When lying in bed that night doing my ‘homework exercises,’ I wondered, what if I try putting my hand on my dozing wife’s back? The result was startling to both of us. There was a huge static discharge between us. She shot up in bed and I nearly jumped right out1 ‘What the dickens are you doing?’... Sony!’
Two days later I was coming home in a crowded bus when a person boarded with a large elderly dog that was obviously very distressed. Right I thought, ~let’s try this reiki stuff on the dog,’ even though I was a few seats away. I could hardly believe my eyes, no sooner did I start than the dog shuffled its self under the seat and went to sleep’ ‘OK so there would appear to be something happening with this reiki thing!’ That was at the beginning, and a couple of personal lessons learnt. Showing me something was taking place when using energy work and to have respect for it.
Later I was to learn another salutary lesson shortly after taking Reiki II. I was then starting to do the big time clever stuff of distance healing. The subject happened to be my youngest daughter who lives in the UK. I had been sending distance energy to her over several days. When unexpectedly in my mind I was confronted with what I can only describe as a ‘big black slab of concrete.’ whenever I tried to make contact with her. I started to get worried about this, so I called up my Reiki Master for help. You could almost hear her starting to laugh on the phone. It’s your daughter Nick, and she c eighteen years old? ‘You expect her subconscious to let you, her father in and to let you know what she is up to. ‘Come on get real. This was a very good example of how one can only go where one is wanted, and one has to ask permission first.
This brings to mind an occasion when I was doing distance healing on a friend. While I was working I received the most mind blowing spectacular colours. The following day 1 called her up to find that at the time she had been working at her computer on a colour brochure, she is a graphic design artist!
Traditionally reiki is a healing modality to help people to help themselves and to get their bodies and lives back in balance. If used on inanimate objects it must be for the greater good of all. The first time I used this was on a summer day three years ago. We live on a delightfully quiet small lake, no power boats, seadoos and very few other cottages, beautiful. Our tranquility was shattered by a boat with a bunch of guys out fishing who seemed to be getting most of the catch out of the cooler. They became progressively louder as the afternoon wore on and the language more profane. Some people just do not realize how sound carries over water, and even though they were near the middle of the lake their conversation was only exceeded by the noise of their engine I resorted to reiki. ...I felt very humble when, an hour later they went past using their hands and pieces of wood to paddle with, as their engine had died!...
Two winters back we were driving to Toronto where I work part time. It was evening and the rush hour was starting but we are familiar with the run, and hey we were going in the opposite direction of the main flow, so it was no big deal. When this!!!!!!! started to tail-gate us. It was really bad, four head lights plus fog lights, right up our muffler. You know the type. My wife was driving, she was starting to get scared as the lights blinded her, and she’s a city girl and tough with it. He would not back off(it had to be a man) this was more than just dangerous.... So I called on reiki again.. ..We had just turned south on the 404 when his light went out two at a time. He started to drop back. The last I saw of him as I looked behind were just his side lights as he came to a stop on the hard shoulder!....
I am very careful not to misuse reiki, as it is only to be used for the greater good. Still now whenever something a little out of the ordinary occurs around the house it’s “Nick what have you been up to ?…”
There is so much fun in reiki as well as the serious side of helping others and this wonderful planet that we all live on. It can be used at any time in any place on virtually anything. I hope you get the chance to learn more about it and in time become a practitioner.
