The Value of Iridology within the Context of a Multiply Modality Holistic Health Clinic (a case study)
By Paul Henderson BSc. (Honours Health Sciences) R.N.C.P., MH, D.Ac., C.C.Ir.,
I practice a wide range of Holistic Health Care modalities for my clients. Combining modalities has provided me with a battery of health assessment and treatment methods, which are both complimentary and comprehensive. This has proven to be in the best interest of the client’s health. IRIDOLOGY has become one of my main health assessment tools, and also serves as an excellent barometer during the recovery process. Other assessment tools include Nutritional Symptomatology, Tongue/Pulse Diagnosis (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Hair Analysis and Applied Kinesiology -Muscle Response Testing.
Treatments centre around Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), herbs, homeopathy, nutrition, and diet and lifestyle changes including T’ai Chi and Chi-Kung (deep breathing therapy).
My client arrived with complaints of frequent, chronic headaches, anxiety, and poor blood circulation. She had a history of osteoporosis, for which she was taking high amounts of calcium carbonate. Her diet included excessive consumption of dairy products and refined white flour products. Recent medical tests indicated that her cholesterol level were high; digestion was reported to be “fairly good”.
Iris photos revealed a condition of chronic toxemia in the digestive tract, including the intestines. Toxins extended beyond the bowel walls, impacting adjacent tissues and organs, including the ‘anxiety/concern’ zone in the right iris. Significant tension was stored throughout the body in the form of tension rings. The presence of a ‘sodium/cholesterol ring’ indicated a tendency for hardening of the arteries and a build up of cholesterol and/or mineral deposits (sodium/calcium) (see photo #1).
Acupressure massage revealed tender spots located on the bottoms of the feet and confirmed problems with digestion (stomach, liver), elimination (intestines), and weak adrenal glands. Within the context of TCM, tongue diagnosis revealed a weakened stomach and bowel function and stagnation of blood and chi (energy) circulation. Chinese pulse diagnosis confirmed the weak digestion, sluggish bowels, and poor arterial circulation. The most salient concerns revealed by the Nutritional Symptomatology Questionnaire were under active stomach/intestines and severe deficiencies in the anti-stress nutrients (C, B-Complex, Calcium, Magnesium, and Essential Fatty Acids). Hair analysis indicated significantly low levels of blood calcium; probably due to poor calcium absorption.
Her program of therapy included a herbal detox formula to eliminate the toxic overload and support her liver function, and also calcium sulphate (homeopathic mineral salts) to aid blood purification. She immediately cut back on high fat foods and the hard to digest/absorb mineral supplements (calcium carbonate). A switch was made to a herbal formula containing high amounts of organic calcium and silica, which are much better absorbed than is calcium in dairy products. There was an emphasis on water-rich foods (fresh fruits/vegetables), legumes, onions, garlic and lecithin supplements in order to reduce excess fats and cholesterol in the body. In addition, she began a program of regular low-impact aerobic exercises at a local fitness centre.
Acupuncture treatments, 2x/week, were designed to improve digestion, assist in the elimination of toxins, support the liver function, improve circulation of energy and blood and relax and support a stressed nervous system. Since 80% of all headaches are related to a congested liver and toxins in the bloodstream (according to TCM), I also targeted the liver in the acupuncture therapy. My client began learning and practicing T’ai Chi and Chi-Kung (deep breathing exercises) to improve circulation, strengthen all weakened functions and to reduce stress. She also began to add anti-stress nutrients to her daily diet. The most supportive nutrients for her were confirmed via Applied Kinesiology-Muscle Response Testing (AK-MRT).
The first week into therapy, she began to experience frequent and thorough bowel movements; and her energy picked up immediately. Although her headaches became more intense and frequent, she felt they were easier to cope with. By the end of the first month, headaches began to diminish in both intensity and frequency and her appetite normalized as the digestion improved. Her anxiety and stress levels were significantly reduced. Her progress accelerated over the next few months, while she continued with an improved diet and lifestyle; regular acupuncture sessions, herbal/homeopathic support, and T’ai Chi and Chi-Kung practice.
After six months of natural therapy, the results of a follow-up Nutritional Symptomatology Questionnaire confirmed significantly improved digestion and only slight signs of deficiency in anti-stress nutrients. Follow-up tongue diagnosis (TCM) confirmed improvements in digestion and circulation of blood and energy. Previously sore reflexology pressure points on the feet were now significantly less tender. A bone scan indicated that her bone density had leveled off and was no longer declining. Her previously high cholesterol levels dropped to within an acceptable range. A follow-up Hair analysis indicated normal serum calcium levels; assimilation of organic calcium. Follow-up Iris Analysis revealed shrinkage of toxin spilling beyond the colon walls and a more clear and brighter stomach/intestinal zone in general. A softening of tension rings and a thinning of the sodium/cholesterol ring were also evident.
She is now into the maintenance phase of her wellness program, relying mainly on her daily diet and lifestyle with the addition of minimal nutritive supplementation.
IRIDOLOGY can be a valuable visual tool for quickly assessing both the general health condition as well as that of specific organs/glands/tissues. Some advantages of IRIDOLOGY over the other modalities include: the health condition of all areas of the body are revealed at once, also allowing one to observe the interrelationship between organs/glands/tissues; the iris reveals underlying causes of disease; and all stages of disease are observable even prior to symptoms (sub-clinical). I believe that IRIDOLOGY can be included among other Holistic Health modalities a very complementary fashion and will only enhance the therapists’ health assessment and monitoring capabilities.
